Cryptography experts gather to discuss cybersecurity
With the number of cybersecurity threats growing everyday, industry experts need to be at the top of their game just to keep up with new developments. The internet has succeeded in connecting much of the world, but it has also opened governments and private sectors up to new threats. A data breach affecting an institution in one part of the world could lead to consequences for another sector in an entirely different region. It is that communal sense of a shared menace that has brought cryptographers and security experts together for an annual meeting on the current concerns of the industry.
The RSA Conference, formerly known as "Cryptography, Standards & Public Policy", will bring together industry experts including executives from internet powerhouses as well as the former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice for a five day convention on the state of cybersecurity and what can be done to enhance it. The theme for this year's event is "Security in Knowledge: Mastering Data. Securing the World."
No doubt much discussion will be had over the growing threat of cybercriminals and the rising number of incidents involving data breaches across the globe. With the recent security failures at government facilities and financial institutions, concern over network security is on the rise. The theft of confidential information from a government agency database could put national security at risk. A major attack against commercial interests could strike a devastating blow to a country's economy as well as lead to the widespread theft of customer identification and account information. For example, the Independent reported that cybercrime is currently estimated to cost the UK economy approximately $41 billion each year.
A vital aspect of any network security system is the presence of comprehensive encryption techniques. Obfuscating data both stored on a server and transmitted between IP addresses should be a focus of anyone looking to secure his or her network. With the massive number of cryptographers expected to be on hand for the convention, the subject of how to enhance data encryption efforts should be given top billing.
