The cyberthreats of today

Staying up to date with current cyberthreat trends can be an exhausting process even for the most diligent security expert. The amount of new threats popping up each day is nothing short of staggering: An average of 74,000 unique malware strains emerged daily in 2012, according to a report from Panda Labs.

Security Management reported that a senior threat researcher recently spoke of the current cyberthreat climate, noting several emerging trends. Exploit kits have become much more popular with hackers lately. Although these resources at one time would have cost thousands of dollars, their prices have dropped substantially. Cyberthieves can use exploit kits to build botnets capable of launching attacks against sophisticated network security systems.

Phishing attacks have become much more intricate as well. Email attachments are falling out of favor with data thieves who now opt to use weblinks to gain access to a company network. This method reduces the forensics footprint of the breach, as email attachments can be quickly detected.

With the multitude of threats lurking in cyberspace, data breaches are an inevitability. Although businesses should always have strong perimeter defenses, they need to plan for a hacker gaining access to their system. This means protecting data with strong encryption measures. In addition to protecting stored data, companies need to be wary of information being transmitted across networks.

Cyberthreats are becoming more sophisticated with each passing day. Protect in-transit data with an SSL certificate.
