Encryption a valuable tool in personal security

There have been numerous events in the past year that have called personal data security into question. Attacks on large retailers left tens of millions of customers' credit card information exposed, for example. The message is clear: Data security is not something that can be taken for granted. One way to protect data security is through encryption. Here are some key benefits that encrypting personal and corporate data will provide.

1. Protects your device if stolen. According to a CheckPoint article, 60 percent of data breaches that occur happen on stolen IT Equipment. But through encryption, businesses and users can make sure their information is not stolen even if their devices are.

2. Supports cloud growth. Industry expert Bryan Glick said that 2014 will be the "Year of the Cloud." Indeed, 53 percent of businesses worldwide use the cloud in some form. It's only a matter of time before the full conversion is complete. And while most agree that the cloud move is a good thing, one of the concerns associated with it is that private information is stored in a public place. For businesses, this could mean that competitors might have easier access to the cloud they occupy. The consequences there could be dire. That's where encryption comes in handy. By encrypting data in the cloud, sensitive information remains protected even when the provider's system is breached. Additionally, when transmitting information to the vendor's system, using technologies such as SSL can reduce the risk that it is compromised in transit.

3. Protects backup tapes from falling into the wrong hands. A bank reported in October 2012 that two backup tapes containing information for 260,000 customers had been stolen, according to Network World. Without proper encryption, the data was vulnerable to attack. But by encrypting data on tapes, businesses can ensure greater safety. Even if the tapes are stolen, the data won't be compromised.

4. Accounts for remote business. A large chunk of business these days is done outside the office, and many offices have employees working remotely on a daily basis. Keeping track of remote workers can feel cumbersome, but it doesn't have to be. As industry expert Steve Pate pointed out in Network World, there are inherent vulnerabilities in remote offices, including the fact that they likely aren't as well guarded as a company's main office. The concern about data being stolen from these remote workplaces can be allayed through proper encryption. Since a remote office could take the form of an apartment or a coffee shop, it's important to have proper encryption in place, since the chance of that "office" getting broken into is considerably higher than if it were corporate headquarters.

Make sure that your important data doesn't fall victim to a breach by looking into your encryption options today.
