Companies losing less money to cyber crime

The FBI and the Computer Security Institute (CSI) have declared that, despite the number of headlines proclaiming the proliferation of online crime, the amount of money that companies are losing because of malware is dropping.

Additionally, this is the fourth year in a row that they have decreased.

In the survey, respondents said that they had lost an average of US$204,000 in 2005 because of online crime (this is a 68% drop from the figures of 2004). In 2006 that number dropped by 18% to US$168,000.

"How do you go about reconciling the sense of things getting worse with the respondents who are saying they are losing less money?" The editorial director of CSI, Robert Richardson asked at the NetSec conference that took place last week.

He says that the answer lies partly in the fact that the respondents had actually had fewer security breaches to report overall, even though theft, insider abuse and viruses were all still highly reported threats.

Richardson did say that "the danger of insiders may be somewhat overstated". This finding is due to the fact that 33% of the respondent claimed that they had experienced no loss due to insider threats. 29% of those that did have insider threats claimed that they accounted for less that 20% of their losses.

Another contributing factor is that more and more companies are using security software and spyware protection.

Richardson went on to say that there are fewer of some of the attacks that have been such a plague for many years resulting in respondents are using less and less money.

However, it is the security vendors that will suffer due to the smaller amount of money being used in online security. According to the survey, companies are now spending less than 2% of their budgets on online security. This is a 33% drop from last year.
