Web surfing the main cause of malware infections
Many people believe that the easiest way to get a virus is through an infected email attachment, however it has been discovered that the real danger for corporations lies in employees surfing the web.
IDC Denmark has found that businesses are more prone to find their systems infected with malicious software that was contracted through web browsing by employees than through bogus email attachments. 200 companies were surveyed and 80 of them claimed that they had had their systems infected by malware despite the fact that 150 of the companies claimed to have a security policy. It was also found that much of the malware did not arrive via email.
Per Andersen, IDC Denmark's managing director said that many people believe that email is the online environments biggest threat, but this is not true. Most infections actually come from surfing the web. He also says that companies that do not monitor Internet usage are five times more likely to become infected. And even when private Internet use of employees is banned, the problem is not decreased as the policies are not enforced. According to the IDC, it is also very unrealistic to ban private Internet use, but monitoring processes should be better. Andersen also warned that attacks can come from all over the place. He mentioned a particularly sneaky attack when an online gambling site installed a Trojan in its downloadable help program.
