While these are the top reasons to implement SSL protection, they are not the only driving factors. Companies may also want to ensure customer trust, which can be boosted when website visitors see the Web address or digital certificate seal on the page. Additionally, SSLs can also be used to protect the login information of consumers, employees or partnering businesses.

Furthermore, if users are visiting the site through an older Web browser, they may need the extra protection offered by an SSL.

While all SSLs protect information with encryption, there are several different types including extended validation, single domain, multiple domain and wildcard certificates. Different websites needing protection for a range of sensitive information require certain types of SSL certificates.
